-5V fixed rail, 1.5A continuous, TO-220 through-hole
The L7905CV-DG is a fixed -5V negative linear regulator from STMicroelectronics, delivering up to 1.5 A continuous output current. It is the go-to part when you need a clean negative supply rail for op-amp bipolar rails, audio preamps, or industrial sensor bias — the negative complement to the 78xx positive series. The TO-220 package with through-hole mounting makes it a straightforward hand-solder or wave-solder part — no reflow profile needed, and the metal tab can be bolted to a heatsink for higher load currents. The dropout voltage is 1.4 V typical at 1 A, so you need at least -6.4 V on the input to hold regulation at that load.
The 60 dB PSRR at 120 Hz tells you the regulator attenuates full-wave-rectified mains ripple by a factor of 1000. For a -5 V rail feeding an audio op-amp or a precision ADC reference, that keeps the 100/120 Hz hum well below the noise floor of most 16-bit systems.
