Fixed 6V rail at 1.5A — the headroom and ripple rejection that matter
The L7806ACV-DG is a fixed-output positive linear regulator delivering 6V at up to 1.5A from a maximum 35V input rail. This is the classic 78xx-series three-terminal regulator in the TO-220 package — a workhorse for generating a clean 6V bus from an unregulated or higher-voltage supply. The 65dB PSRR at 120Hz means the output ripple from a full-wave rectified supply is attenuated by a factor of roughly 1800 — critical when the 6V rail feeds analog circuitry or a microcontroller's analog reference. Dropout voltage is 2V max at 1A load — the input rail must stay at least 2V above 6V to maintain regulation. With a 35V absolute maximum input, this part handles automotive or industrial 12V/24V rails with plenty of margin.
Thermal and protection envelope for the TO-220 build
Operating junction temperature range is 0°C to 125°C — commercial-grade, suited for indoor equipment, benchtop instruments, and consumer electronics where ambient stays below 70°C. The TO-220 tab should be heatsunk for loads above 500mA to keep junction temperature within limits. Built-in over-temperature and short-circuit protection means the regulator survives an output short indefinitely — the die thermal-limits the current until the fault clears. Quiescent current is 6mA typical, which matters for always-on rails in battery-powered designs.
