What this PFC controller does on the board
The L6563ATR is a transition-mode (boundary conduction mode) power-factor-correction controller from STMicroelectronics. It drives a single boost stage, switching the MOSFET on when the inductor current hits zero and off when it reaches the peak set by the error amplifier — this keeps the input current in phase with the line voltage without a dedicated multiplier. Supply voltage range is 10.3 V to 22 V, so it can be biased from an auxiliary winding on the boost inductor or from a separate 12 V or 15 V rail. The 50 µA startup current means the startup resistor sees negligible dissipation — a 100 kΩ resistor from the rectified DC bus drops about 5 mW while the controller is off. Operating temperature spans -25°C to 125°C, which covers industrial ambient conditions but not the full automotive range. The 125°C junction limit is the thermal design target — keep the copper area under the SO-14 package adequate to pull heat away from the die.
Package and rework — can I swap it on site?
It comes in a 14-SOIC (0.154", 3.90 mm width) package, standard SO-14 footprint. The 1.27 mm pin pitch is wide enough that you can swap it with a soldering iron and flux if you have a steady hand — no hot-air station strictly required, though a preheater under the board helps avoid lifting pads. The tape-and-reel variant (L6563ATR) is the one you get from distribution in cut tape or full reels. If your BOM calls for the tube version (L6563A), the die is identical — just a different package delivery method. Both are surface-mount, same footprint, same electrical ratings.
Lifecycle and sourcing — still active, no EOL worry
