Product details

Stepper motion controller on a 38-pin HTSSOP

The L6480H is a bipolar stepper motor controller from ST's STSPIN L64 series, handling commutation and direction management through an SPI interface. It drives external power stages via four pre-driver half-bridge outputs, so the actual motor current capability depends on the external MOSFETs you pair it with — the controller itself handles the sequencing and microstepping logic. Step resolution goes from full-step down to 1/128 microstepping, which means you can smooth out low-speed vibration and position the rotor in 256 microsteps per full electrical cycle without an external interpolator. The digital motion engine on-chip manages acceleration profiles and target position — the host MCU just sends SPI commands.

The surface-mount footprint is the same as the L6480HTR variant — the only difference is the shipping format: tube vs tape-and-reel.

Frequently asked questions

Is the L6480H the same die as the L6480HTR?

Yes — the L6480H and L6480HTR share the same silicon and 38-HTSSOP package. The only difference is the shipping format: the L6480H ships in a tube, while the L6480HTR ships in tape-and-reel. They are functionally interchangeable on the same PCB footprint.

What microstepping resolution does the L6480H support?

The L6480H supports step resolutions from full-step through 1/128 microstepping. This gives up to 256 microsteps per full electrical cycle, which smooths low-speed torque ripple and reduces mechanical resonance without an external interpolator.
