Single P-channel high-side switch for 8–60 V loads
The STMicroelectronics IPS161HFTR is a single-output high-side P-channel power switch designed for general-purpose resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads in the 8 V to 60 V range. It delivers up to 600 mA continuous output with a typical on-resistance of 60 mOhm, keeping conduction losses low in solenoid, relay, lamp, and motor-drive circuits. The switch is non-inverting with a 1:1 input-to-output ratio, requires no Vcc supply for the internal logic, and integrates fixed current limiting, open-load detection, and over-temperature protection — reducing external BOM count.
At 600 mA load, a 60 mOhm typical on-resistance yields about 22 mW conduction loss at 25 °C junction. The actual Rds(on) rises with temperature; at 150 °C junction the loss roughly doubles, so the thermal budget must account for the worst-case ambient and heatsinking through the exposed pad of the PowerSSO-12 package.
Integrated fault protection — what it saves on the BOM
Fixed current limiting protects the switch and load during short-circuit events without an external sense resistor. Open-load detection flags a disconnected load when the switch is off — useful for diagnostics in safety-critical systems like brake lights or valve drivers. Over-temperature shutdown prevents thermal runaway if the die exceeds the safe junction limit.
