700 V off-state, Snubberless — what that buys you
The BTB16-700BWRG is an STMicroelectronics Snubberless Alternistor triac rated for 700 V off-state voltage and 16 A RMS on-state current in a TO-220-3 through-hole package. The Snubberless construction means the device can commutate inductive loads (motors, solenoids, transformers) without the external RC snubber typically needed to prevent false turn-on from dv/dt. That saves two passives and one PCB via per phase.
16 A RMS — sizing the heatsink
At 16 A RMS continuous the junction-to-case thermal path in the TO-220 package needs a heatsink. The 50 mA hold current (Ih) and 50 mA gate trigger current (Igt) are standard levels that most microcontroller-driven optotriac or pulse-transformer gate drivers can source without a booster stage.
Surge rating: 168 A at 60 Hz
Non-repetitive surge current is 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz (Itsm). That covers the cold-filament inrush of incandescent lighting banks or the starting surge of a small induction motor. The 1.3 V maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) keeps the drive circuit simple — a standard 5 V or 3.3 V logic output through a series resistor will fire it.
Active product status and ROHS3 compliant.
