16 A RMS, 600 V — AC load switching anchor
The STMicroelectronics BTB16-600BRG is a standard-gate TRIAC rated for 16 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state blocking voltage, housed in a through-hole TO-220-3 package. It is a workhorse part for AC power control — phase-angle dimmers, solid-state relays, motor-speed controllers, and heater drives — where the load current stays under 16 A and the line voltage is 240 VAC or below.
Gate trigger current — standard vs sensitive gate
The 50 mA maximum gate trigger current (Igt) marks this as a standard-gate TRIAC. Unlike a sensitive-gate device (typically 5–10 mA), the BTB16-600BRG needs a gate drive that can source 50 mA reliably — a microcontroller GPIO pin alone will not do it; an external transistor or optocoupler driver is required. The 1.3 V maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) is compatible with 5 V logic through a current-limiting resistor, but the 50 mA Igt floor is the real design constraint.
Surge current and hold current for load coordination
Non-repetitive surge current is 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz (Itsm). This is the rating that determines whether the TRIAC survives the inrush of a motor start or a lamp cold-filament surge. The 50 mA maximum hold current (Ih) means the device latches on once triggered; it will not drop out unless the load current falls below 50 mA for at least half a cycle — a consideration for very light loads or inductive switching where the current zero-crossing may be narrow.
