40 A RMS, 800 V blocking — the thermal and surge envelope
The BTA41-800BRG is a standard triac rated for 40 A RMS on-state current and 800 V off-state blocking voltage, housed in the TOP-3 Insulated through-hole package. The 40 A RMS figure is the continuous current limit at the rated case temperature — derate from 25°C case to the 125°C maximum junction temperature per the datasheet curve. The 800 V blocking means it can switch 480 VAC line-to-line with margin on the peak voltage.
Gate drive and surge withstand
Gate trigger current is 50 mA max, gate trigger voltage 1.3 V max — a standard 5 V logic output through a current-limiting resistor can drive it directly, but the 80 mA holding current means the load must draw at least that much to stay latched on at the zero-cross. Non-repetitive surge current is 400 A at 50 Hz, 420 A at 60 Hz — this is the peak one-cycle withstand for motor inrush or capacitor charging events, not a repetitive rating.
Active production, ROHS3 compliant
ROHS3 compliant per, so it meets the current EU restriction directive without exemption claims. The TOP-3 Insulated package provides electrical isolation between the tab and the heatsink, simplifying thermal management in metal-enclosed assemblies.
