Active production, 40 A RMS, 600 V blocking
The STMicroelectronics BTA41-600BRG is an active-production Standard Triac rated for 40 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state blocking voltage, housed in a TOP-3 Insulated through-hole package.
Surge capability and thermal headroom
Non-repetitive surge current is rated 400 A at 50 Hz and 420 A at 60 Hz — this handles the inrush from a motor start or capacitor bank without exceeding the junction's thermal limit. Operating junction temperature range spans -40°C to 125°C, so it can sit in an outdoor enclosure or near a heatsink without derating below the 40 A RMS ceiling. Gate trigger current is 50 mA max with a 1.3 V max gate trigger voltage — a standard logic-level or optocoupler driver can fire it directly. Hold current is 80 mA max, meaning the load must draw at least that much to keep the triac latched once triggered; below that the device drops out at zero-cross.
Package, compliance, and sourcing
The TOP-3 Insulated package (Supplier Device Package TOP3) provides electrical isolation between the tab and the heatsink — no extra insulating pad needed for grounded heatsinks. Supplied in Tube packaging; the base product number is BTA41, so parametric variants share the same footprint and pinout.
