16 A sensitive-gate triac for mains-switched loads
The STMicroelectronics BTA16-800SWRG is a logic-level sensitive-gate triac rated for 800 V off-state voltage and 16 A RMS on-state current, housed in a TO-220 through-hole package. The 10 mA maximum gate trigger current lets a microcontroller I/O or optocoupler fire it directly, eliminating a driver transistor from the BOM. Intended for AC load switching in industrial and appliance controls — motor starters, heater banks, lighting ballasts, and solid-state relays — where the 125°C junction temperature rating covers the thermal environment of a sealed enclosure or adjacent heatsink.
Package and mounting — TO-220 thermal path
The TO-220-3 package (supplier device package TO-220) is a through-hole tab-mount design. The metal tab is the collector/drain thermal path — bolt it to a heatsink with thermal compound for any load above a few amps. The 16 A RMS rating assumes adequate heatsinking; at full current in free air the die will exceed the 125°C junction limit without one.
