800 V, 16 A Snubberless triac for inductive loads
The STMicroelectronics BTA16-800CWRG is a Snubberless™ Alternistor triac rated for 800 V off-state voltage and 16 A RMS on-state current. It switches AC loads without an external RC snubber in many inductive applications — the Alternistor structure handles the commutation dV/dt internally. The TO-220-3 package fits standard through-hole mounting, with the tab tied to the MT2 terminal for heatsinking.
The 800 V off-state rating gives headroom for 230 VAC mains (peak ~325 V) and even 400 VAC three-phase lines (peak ~565 V). The 16 A RMS on-state current is the continuous load limit — derate for ambient temperature above 25 °C and for heatsink thermal resistance. The 35 mA gate trigger current (Igt max) is compatible with standard MCU-driven optotriac or logic-level drivers; the 35 mA holding current (Ih max) means the triac stays latched above that load current.
It is ROHS3 compliant.
At the high end, the 16 A rating must be derated per the datasheet curve — the tab temperature, not the ambient, sets the limit. The TO-220 package allows bolt-on or clip-on heatsinking for continuous loads above a few amps.
