The BTA16-800BRG is a standard triac rated for 16 A RMS on-state current with an 800 V off-state blocking voltage, making it suitable for switching AC loads like heaters, motors, and lighting in 230/277 VAC mains circuits where the peak voltage stays well below the 800 V ceiling.
Gate drive requirements — standard vs sensitive gate
This is a standard triac with a maximum gate trigger current (Igt) of 50 mA and a maximum gate trigger voltage (Vgt) of 1.3 V. That means the MCU or driver circuit must source at least 50 mA into the gate to turn it on — a typical GPIO pin cannot drive it directly; a transistor or optocoupler driver is needed. The hold current (Ih) is also 50 mA max, so the load current must stay above 50 mA to keep the triac latched after the gate signal is removed. For very light loads (e.g., a small fan or relay coil below 50 mA), the triac may drop out at the zero-cross — a snubber or dummy load may be required.
