16 A, 600 V logic-level triac — what the ratings mean for your load
The BTA16-600SWRG is a logic-level sensitive-gate triac rated for 16 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state voltage — the 600 V blocking spec comfortably clears the peak of a 277 VAC line (392 V peak) with margin for transients, so it suits universal-input power supplies and industrial heater/valve controls running on 230/277 VAC.
Package and thermal integration — TO-220-3 through-hole
The TO-220-3 through-hole package with a metal tab allows direct heatsinking — the tab is electrically isolated from the die but typically connected to the MT2 terminal, so a mica washer or sil-pad is needed if the heatsink is grounded.
Surge current and fuse coordination
Non-repetitive surge current is 160 A at 50 Hz and 168 A at 60 Hz — this is the peak the triac can survive for one half-cycle without failing. A fast-blow fuse rated below 160 A (e.g., 15 A or 20 A) will clear before the die cracks on a shorted load.
Active lifecycle and compliance
ROHS3 compliant — no restricted substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, phthalates) above the threshold, so the part passes EU RoHS and most global environmental requirements without an exemption.
