Product details

Snubberless™ alternistor for inductive-load switching

The STMicroelectronics BTA12-800BWRG is an 800 V, 12 A RMS Snubberless™ alternistor triac in a TO-220AB insulated through-hole package.

800 V blocking and 12 A load capacity

With an 800 V off-state voltage rating, the BTA12-800BWRG comfortably handles 230 VAC and 400 VAC mains with margin for line transients. Non-repetitive surge current is rated at 120 A for 50 Hz and 126 A for 60 Hz, providing headroom for motor-start inrush or capacitive-load charging events. Gate trigger current and voltage are 50 mA and 1.3 V maximum, respectively — compatible with standard logic-level drivers or optocoupler outputs. The 50 mA maximum hold current ensures the triac latches on once triggered and does not drop out prematurely during load current zero-crossings.

TO-220AB insulated package — mounting without isolation hardware

The TO-220AB Insulated (full-pack) package has an electrically isolated tab, so the heatsink does not require an insulating pad or washer. This simplifies assembly and reduces thermal resistance from junction to heatsink compared to a non-isolated TO-220 with a mica spacer. The through-hole leads suit standard PCB or point-to-point wiring.

Frequently asked questions

Can BTA12-800BWRG switch inductive loads without a snubber?

Yes. The Snubberless™ alternistor design is specifically intended for high-inductive load switching — motors, transformers, solenoids — without requiring an external RC snubber network. This reduces component count and board area compared to a standard triac in the same application.

What is the difference between BTA12-800BWRG and the standard BTA12-800B?

The BTA12-800BWRG is a Snubberless™ alternistor, while the standard BTA12-800B is a conventional triac. The BWRG suffix indicates the Snubberless™ version, which can switch inductive loads without an external snubber. Both share the same 800 V / 12 A rating and TO-220AB package, but the gate trigger characteristics and commutation performance differ.
