12 A sensitive-gate triac for AC power control
The STMicroelectronics BTA12-600TWRG is a 12 A RMS, 600 V off-state logic-level sensitive-gate triac in a TO-220 through-hole package. Its 5 mA maximum gate trigger current (Igt) means a microcontroller output pin can fire it directly through a series resistor — no separate driver transistor needed on the BOM. The 10 mA maximum hold current (Ih) keeps the triac latched once triggered, even with lightly inductive loads like small motors or relay coils.
Industrial temperature range and surge capability
The non-repetitive surge current (Itsm) is 120 A at 50 Hz and 126 A at 60 Hz — enough headroom to survive the inrush from a cold incandescent lamp bank or a capacitor-input power supply on startup.
TO-220 package: heatsink and rework notes
The TO-220-3 package has a metal tab that bolts to a heatsink or chassis — plan the mounting hole and thermal pad area on the PCB or enclosure. Through-hole leads survive a hot-air station rework cycle without lifting pads; the tab is the main thermal path, so a dab of thermal paste between tab and heatsink matters more than the solder joints.
ROHS3 compliant. No official second-source cross-reference in the ledger, but the BTA06-600SRG (6 A, same family) is a lower-current sibling if the load budget allows.
