Product details

12 A AC load switching without a snubber

The BTA12-600CWRG is an STMicroelectronics Snubberless™ Alternistor triac rated for 12 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state voltage. The Alternistor structure provides commutating dv/dt immunity that eliminates the external RC snubber normally required when switching inductive loads like small motors, solenoids, or transformer primaries. With a 35 mA maximum gate trigger current and 1.3 V maximum gate trigger voltage, the device can be driven directly from a microcontroller I/O pin through a current-limiting resistor — no additional driver transistor needed for most 5 V logic families.

Surge handling and thermal budget

The 35 mA maximum holding current ensures the triac stays latched at low load currents, preventing premature turn-off in lightly loaded circuits.

Package and mounting for power dissipation

Housed in a standard TO-220-3 through-hole package (supplier device package TO-220), the BTA12-600CWRG mounts to a heatsink via the metal tab — the tab is electrically isolated from the die but must be considered for creepage and clearance in the PCB layout. The through-hole leads handle the 12 A RMS current without additional thermal relief on the copper pour.

Lifecycle and compliance status

ROHS3 compliant, so it meets EU RoHS exemption requirements for lead-free soldering processes without additional documentation burden.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Snubberless™ feature and why does it matter?

Snubberless™ refers to the Alternistor triac structure that provides high commutating dv/dt immunity, allowing the device to switch inductive loads without an external RC snubber network. This saves board space, reduces BOM cost, and eliminates the snubber resistor's power dissipation.

What is the maximum load current and voltage for the BTA12-600CWRG?

The triac is rated for 12 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state voltage. The non-repetitive surge current is 126 A at 60 Hz, providing margin for inrush events.
