The BTA12-600CRG is a standard triac from ST's BTA12 series, rated for 600 V off-state voltage and 12 A RMS on-state current. That 600 V blocking gives comfortable headroom on 240 V AC mains (nominal 340 V peak) and even covers 277 V AC lighting circuits. The 12 A RMS continuous rating suits resistive loads like heaters and incandescent lamps, and derates for inductive loads such as small motors or solenoids — plan the heatsink accordingly.
Gate drive: 25 mA trigger, 1.3 V gate voltage
Gate trigger current is 25 mA max, with a 1.3 V max gate trigger voltage. That is a standard-sensitivity triac — it needs a clean 25 mA pulse from the drive circuit, typically an optocoupler or a small-signal transistor. The 25 mA hold current means the load must draw at least that much to keep the triac latched; below that, the device drops out at the zero-crossing. For low-current loads like a small fan or an LED driver, check that the load current exceeds the hold current.
Surge capability and thermal environment
Non-repetitive surge current is rated 120 A at 50 Hz and 126 A at 60 Hz — enough to handle the inrush of a motor start or a cold-filament lamp bank. The TO-220 Full Pack (TO-220AB insulated) package has the tab fully isolated — no extra insulating washer needed against the heatsink, which simplifies assembly and cuts a BOM line.
