The STMicroelectronics BTA08-600BRG is a standard triac in a TO-220 through-hole package, rated for 8 A RMS on-state current and 600 V off-state voltage. It is a general-purpose AC switch for loads like resistive heaters, small motors, solenoids, and lighting dimmers in industrial and appliance equipment.
The 8 A RMS on-state current sets the continuous load ceiling. For a 230 VAC line, that's about 1.8 kW of resistive load — a 1/2 HP motor or a bank of halogen lamps. The 600 V off-state voltage gives enough margin for 230 VAC or 277 VAC mains with typical line transients; you don't need a higher-voltage snubber or MOV for normal industrial mains. The 50 mA gate trigger current and 1.3 V gate trigger voltage are standard levels that any microcontroller GPIO with a simple transistor driver can handle. The non-repetitive surge rating of 80 A at 50 Hz and 84 A at 60 Hz tells you this triac can survive the cold-start inrush of a motor or incandescent lamp without failing short.
