The non-repetitive surge rating of 80 A at 50 Hz and 84 A at 60 Hz means it can handle inrush from incandescent lamps or capacitor loads without failing.

Gate Drive and Thermal Considerations

Maximum gate trigger current is 30 mA and gate trigger voltage is 1 V — low enough to be driven directly by a microcontroller I/O pin or a logic-level optocoupler, simplifying the drive circuit. The 30 mA holding current ensures the TRIAC stays latched once triggered, even with lightly inductive loads. The D2PAK package (TO-263-3) has a large exposed thermal tab on the bottom. For 8 A RMS conduction, the PCB copper area under the tab must be sized to keep the junction temperature within the -40°C to 125°C operating range.
