The 2A output rating is continuous — the thermal pad needs a solid copper pour and vias to keep junction temperature under control at full load; a layout skimpy on copper will current-limit or thermally cycle before 2A.
The exposed pad package is a rework-friendly footprint — the leads are visible and accessible with a hot-air station, and the exposed pad underneath gives you a thermal path to the board.
