Schottky rectifier for low-voltage power conversion
The 1N5819RL is a 40 V, 1 A Schottky barrier rectifier in a DO-41 axial-lead package, built for low forward voltage drop and fast switching in power supplies and polarity protection circuits. Its forward voltage is 550 mV maximum at 1 A, which keeps conduction losses lower than a standard PN-junction diode at the same current. The Schottky technology gives it a fast recovery time under 500 ns at forward currents above 200 mA — useful for switching regulators and freewheeling diodes where reverse recovery losses would otherwise eat into efficiency.
For replacement, look for a Schottky diode in the same DO-41 package rated at least 40 V reverse and 1 A forward with a comparable forward voltage — the 1N5819 base number covers several variants that differ only by packaging and lead form.
What the ratings tell a repair bench
The 40 V reverse voltage rating is the blocking voltage — in a 12 V or 24 V rail this gives healthy margin, but in a 48 V system you need a higher-rated part like the 1N5820 (60 V) or 1N5822 (100 V). The 1 A average rectified current is the continuous DC rating; peak repetitive current can be higher, but the junction temperature limit of 150 °C sets the real ceiling under load. Reverse leakage is 500 µA at 40 V and 25 °C — expect that to climb with temperature, so a heatsink or adequate lead length is needed if the diode runs near its rated current in a warm enclosure.
