1500 W peak pulse — what it buys the rail
The STMicroelectronics 1.5KE68CA is a bidirectional TRANSIL™ TVS diode from the 1.5KE series, rated for 1500 W peak pulse power on a 10/1000 µs waveform. It protects a single 58.1 V nominal rail, clamping transients to 121 V maximum at 83 A peak pulse current (8/20 µs). The bidirectional configuration means a single device handles both positive and negative surges — useful on AC-coupled lines or floating supplies where polarity isn't fixed. The DO-201AA axial-lead package fits through-hole layouts with a straightforward solder-in install; no special pad or thermal management beyond standard lead spacing.
Clamping voltage and capacitance — the selection numbers
The 121 V clamp at 83 A is the number that decides whether the protected circuit survives a lightning-coupled or inductive-load transient. For a 58.1 V rail, the 64.6 V minimum breakdown gives a 6.5 V guard band before the diode starts conducting — tight enough to catch fast overvoltage without nuisance triggering on normal ripple. The 775 pF capacitance at 1 MHz is moderate; it won't load a 50/60 Hz power line but could round edges on a high-speed data line above a few MHz. For signal interfaces, check the signal bandwidth against this capacitance.
Store the reels dry — the Cut Tape and Tape & Box packaging options are standard, but the axial leads are not moisture-sensitive like a plastic SMD package, so no bake cycle is needed before assembly if stored in a dry environment.
