Active production — what it means for the BOM line
The SI8640BD-B-IS2: This is the part to specify into a new design without planning a migration path. Skyworks Solutions lists it as ROHS3 compliant, so it clears EU RoHS exemption-free for medical, industrial, and automotive equipment shipped into Europe.
Isolation barrier and transient immunity — the real-world limits
Rated 5000 Vrms isolation — this is reinforced insulation class per IEC 60747-17, suitable for medical patient-contact isolation barriers and motor-drive safety isolation where the working voltage stays under 600 Vrms. Common-mode transient immunity is spec'd at 50 kV/µs minimum. That figure means the output does not glitch when a 1000 V/ns edge jumps across the isolation gap — exactly what happens when an IGBT switches a 600 V bus in a drive cabinet.
Data rate and propagation — timing closure for isolated links
150 Mbps data rate covers full-speed SPI (up to 50 MHz SCK with margin), UART at any baud rate, and most parallel GPIO isolation links. The 13 ns max propagation delay (tpLH/tpHL) sets the loop timing floor — a closed-loop controller reading an isolated ADC at 10 MHz sees 26 ns round-trip delay through the isolator. Pulse-width distortion is 4.5 ns max, so a 50% duty-cycle clock at 50 MHz retains at least 46% duty after crossing the barrier — no duty-cycle restoration needed on the receiving side. Rise/fall time is 4 ns typical — edge rate fast enough to keep the signal integrity clean across a 10 cm PCB trace but slow enough to avoid excessive ringing on a 5 V rail.
Channel direction and package — what the 4/0 input split means
All four channels are unidirectional with inputs on Side 1 and outputs on Side 2 (4/0 split). No bidirectional data path — a half-duplex RS-485 link needs two channels (TX and RX) and cannot share one channel for both directions. The 16-SOIC wide-body (7.50 mm width) gives 8 mm creepage between the two sides, enough for 5000 Vrms reinforced isolation per IEC 60950-1. The 16-SOIC package dissipates about 1.2 W at 125°C ambient with minimal airflow; derate the supply current if all four channels run at 150 Mbps simultaneously in a hot enclosure.
Sourcing and compliance — documentation on file
Skyworks Solutions supplies the SI8640BD-B-IS2 in tube packaging. No UL, CSA, or VDE certificate numbers appear in the listing — verify the safety certification mark required by your end-equipment standard (IEC 62368-1, IEC 60601-1) against the Skyworks datasheet before committing the BOM.
