Product details

I²C bus isolation in an 8-SOIC footprint

The SI8600AB-B-ISR is a 2-channel bidirectional I²C digital isolator from Skyworks Solutions, built with capacitive coupling technology. It provides 2500Vrms galvanic isolation between the I²C bus segments, with both channels operating bidirectionally — meaning the SDA and SCL lines each carry data in both directions across the isolation barrier without needing a separate direction-control pin.

Common-mode transient immunity is specified at a minimum 35 kV/µs — this is the rate of voltage slew between the two isolated grounds that the part can reject without corrupting the I²C data. In a motor-drive or inverter application where the switching node slews at 10–20 kV/µs, the 35 kV/µs margin keeps the bus from seeing false start/stop conditions. No derating is needed for ambient temperatures up to 125°C, though the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of the SOIC-8 package (typically 120–150 °C/W) should be checked against the total power dissipation at the high end.

Frequently asked questions

Will SI8600AB-B-ISR drop into a board laid out for SI8600AD-B-ISR without rewiring?

Both parts share the same 8-SOIC package and pinout for the I²C function, but the SI8600AD-B-ISR is rated for 5000Vrms isolation versus 2500Vrms on the SI8600AB-B-ISR. The footprint is identical, so a board designed for the AD variant accepts the AB variant mechanically — the difference is the isolation voltage rating, not the pin assignment.
