5 kV reinforced isolation, 6 A gate drive — the parametric that defines the fit
The SI823H3BD-IS3 is a single-channel gate-drive digital isolator from Skyworks Solutions' Si823Hx series, built with capacitive coupling technology. Its 5000 Vrms isolation rating creates a reinforced safety barrier between the low-voltage PWM controller and the high-voltage power stage — the minimum for motor drives, solar inverters, and industrial PSUs that must meet IEC 60747-17 or UL 1577 reinforced isolation requirements. The 6 A peak output current with 4 A source and 4 A sink capability directly charges and discharges the gate capacitance of a power MOSFET or IGBT. For a typical 10 nC gate charge at 15 V, the rise and fall times are 12 ns typ, keeping switching losses low in a 100 kHz hard-switched converter. The 116 ns max propagation delay sets the minimum dead-time budget — a bridge leg running at 200 kHz with 500 ns dead time has 384 ns of margin before the shoot-through window opens. Common-mode transient immunity of 125 kV/µs means the output state holds through the fast dv/dt edges at the switching node of a half-bridge — a SiC or GaN FET switching at 50 V/ns produces a 2.5 kV/µs transient across the isolation barrier, well within the part's rejection capability. This prevents the false turn-on that would short the bridge leg.
Supply rails and temperature grade — the operating envelope
The output side runs from 5.5 V to 30 V, covering the standard gate-drive bias rails for silicon MOSFETs (10-15 V), IGBTs (15-20 V), and SiC FETs (18-20 V). The -40°C to 125°C operating temperature range covers the full industrial ambient envelope. In a motor-drive cabinet with internal heating, the 125°C ceiling provides margin above the typical 85°C ambient. The 14-SOIC wide-body package with 7.50 mm body width and 0.295-inch lead spacing meets the creepage distance for 5 kV reinforced isolation per IEC 60950-1.
