Standoff voltage — the selection anchor
The 1.5SMCJ8.5AS_R1_00001: The 8.5 V reverse standoff voltage is the rating that positions this part on the BOM line — it defines the maximum working DC voltage at which the device remains off and leaks only a defined quiescent current. When a transient exceeds the 9.44 V breakdown threshold, the TVS Zener clamps the line at 14.4 V maximum, limiting what reaches the protected node.
