Clamping chain — standoff, breakdown, and the 48.4 V ceiling
The 1.5SMCJ30A-AU_R1_000A1: At 30 V reverse standoff the diode sits idle in normal operation. When a transient pushes the rail above 33.3 V the Zener avalanche kicks in, clamping the peak surge to 48.4 V. That 48.4 V clamping ceiling is what the downstream IC sees — the 1.5 kW peak-pulse rating buys the headroom needed to absorb a 10/1000 µs surge without going into thermal runaway. The 31 A peak pulse figure tells you the device survives a single-event surge of that magnitude without degradation — useful for load-dump and inductive kickback events on the 12 V automotive rail.
If you are protecting a sensor line that runs through the bulkhead or near the exhaust, this temperature window is the difference between a protection circuit that holds and one that thermally trips under a sustained load dump.
DO-214AB SMC — footprint and assembly note
The DO-214AB (SMC) package is the mid-range SMA/SMB footprint — larger than a SOD-123F but with better thermal dissipation than a SMA.
