Peak pulse power and the 1500W rating
The 1.5 kW rating is the key differentiator from lower-power TVS families — it handles the larger energy dump from inductive kick, motor coil collapse, or ESD at system level, not just board-level whacks. The DO-214AB (SMC) package thermal impedance is sized for this power level; the cathode tab must mount to a solid copper pad on the PCB to realise the rated pulse capability.
Unidirectional Zener TVS — polarity and circuit context
This is a unidirectional clamp, so it protects against positive-going transients in one polarity only — it behaves as a forward-biased diode below ground in the reverse direction, passing through a typical 0.7 V forward drop. For bidirectional protection or AC lines the Panjit family offers the corresponding bidirectional variant. The part is classified for general-purpose applications per the evidence; it does not carry a power-line-protection certification, which would be required for direct AC-mains protection without an intermediate impedance.
