This 234 V ceiling is the voltage the protected circuitry must survive during the surge event. The single unidirectional channel is optimized for DC applications where the polarity is fixed — the cathode band on the DO-214AB package must be oriented toward the positive rail. For AC lines or bidirectional protection, two devices in series or a dedicated bidirectional TVS would be required.
