Triac output with zero-crossing for inductive load switching
The MOC3083M is a 1-channel optoisolator from onsemi with a Triac output and an integrated zero-crossing circuit. The zero-crossing detection means the Triac only turns on near the AC mains zero voltage — this limits inrush current when switching inductive loads like solenoids, contactors, or small motors, and reduces conducted EMI at turn-on.
Off-state voltage and dV/dt immunity for mains-rated circuits
Rated at 800 V off-state voltage and a minimum static dV/dt of 600 V/µs, this optoisolator can hold off the peak of a 480 VAC line (680 V peak) with margin, and the high dV/dt immunity prevents false triggering from line transients or commutating noise on the Triac output. The 4170 Vrms isolation rating (per UL) provides reinforced insulation between the low-voltage LED side and the high-voltage Triac side — suitable for safety isolation in mains-powered control circuits.
Trigger sensitivity and hold current for logic-level drive
Forward voltage is 1.3 V typical at 60 mA max forward current. The Triac hold current (Ih) is 500 µA typical, meaning the output latches on once triggered and only turns off when the load current drops below that level — standard for AC phase control.
