What this triac optoisolator does that a relay cannot
The MOC3063TVM is an onsemi optoisolator with a triac output designed for switching AC loads up to 600 V off-state voltage. Its zero-crossing circuit turns on the triac only near the AC zero crossing, which limits inrush current and reduces conducted EMI — a real advantage over a relay for resistive loads like heaters or incandescent lamps. The 4170 Vrms isolation between the LED input and the triac output meets reinforced isolation requirements for line-voltage control, so you can safely drive it from a low-voltage microcontroller without an additional isolated power supply.
dV/dt rating and false-trigger immunity
The minimum static dV/dt of 600 V/µs means the output triac will not falsely turn on when a fast voltage transient appears across its terminals — a common problem in inductive-load switching or on a noisy AC mains. Compare this to the MOC3073M, which offers 1 kV/µs but lacks the zero-crossing circuit. For most resistive-load applications where you want both low EMI and good transient immunity, the MOC3063TVM hits the sweet spot.
Design-in checklist for the 6-DIP package
The 6-DIP (0.400", 10.16 mm) package has a standard 2.54 mm pin pitch. The LED forward voltage is 1.3 V typical, and the maximum continuous LED current is 60 mA. The triac hold current is 500 µA typical — ensure your load current exceeds this at the minimum line voltage to keep the triac latched on.
