Zero-crossing Triac driver for 600 V AC loads
The onsemi MOC3063M is a 1-channel optoisolator with a Triac output and a built-in zero-crossing detection circuit, packaged in a 6-pin DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) for through-hole mounting. It provides 4170 Vrms galvanic isolation between the low-voltage control side and the 600 V off-state rated AC load side. The zero-crossing circuit ensures the Triac only triggers near the AC mains zero-voltage point, which significantly reduces inrush current and radiated EMI when switching resistive or lightly inductive loads like heaters, solenoids, and incandescent lamps.
Isolation barrier and noise immunity — 600 V/µs dV/dt
Rated for 4170 Vrms isolation, the MOC3063M meets UL recognition (Approval Agency: UL) for reinforced isolation in equipment connected to mains voltage. The 600 V off-state voltage covers 120 VAC, 240 VAC, and 277 VAC line applications with margin. A minimum static dV/dt of 600 V/µs means the output Triac will not falsely trigger from fast voltage transients on the AC line — such as those from nearby motor drives, relay contact arcing, or lightning surges. This is a key parameter for reliable operation in industrial environments where the mains waveform is noisy. Typical hold current (Ih) is 500 µA, ensuring the Triac latches on once triggered until the load current drops below this threshold near the next zero crossing.
