600 V off-state triac for AC load switching
The MOC3052VM is a single-channel optoisolator with a triac output rated for 600 V off-state voltage, making it suitable for switching 230 VAC or 277 VAC loads directly from a low-voltage logic signal. The 4170 Vrms isolation provides reinforced insulation between the control side and the AC line — a requirement for safety-rated designs in industrial controls, motor starters, and solid-state relay modules. Because the output is a non-zero-crossing triac, the load can be triggered at any phase angle, enabling phase-angle dimming of incandescent lamps or soft-start of AC motors. The 1 kV/µs minimum static dV/dt gives the triac immunity to fast-rising line transients, so it will not self-trigger from relay contact bounce or nearby switching power supplies.
Trigger current and hold current margins
This means a 5 V logic output driving a 360 Ω series resistor can reliably fire the triac. The typical hold current (Ih) is 220 µA — once triggered, the triac latches until the load current drops below this threshold near the AC zero crossing. For a 230 VAC resistive load drawing 50 mA, the hold current margin is comfortable; for a very light load (e.g., a 5 W LED driver), verify the load current exceeds 220 µA at the minimum conduction angle to avoid output drop-out.
Active production, through-hole 6-DIP package
It is supplied in a tube of standard 6-DIP (0.300-inch, 7.62 mm) through-hole package. Through-hole DIP packages are preferred for prototyping, low-volume builds, or designs where manual assembly and rework are common. The 6-DIP footprint is widely compatible with standard 0.100-inch pitch sockets and perfboards.
Industrial temperature range and approvals
The operating temperature range spans -40°C to 85°C, covering industrial and outdoor applications such as HVAC controllers, vending machines, and lighting ballasts. The part carries UR and VDE agency approvals, simplifying certification for equipment sold in North America and Europe.
