12-bit ripple counter for timing and frequency division
The onsemi MC14040BDR2G is a 12-stage binary ripple counter from the 4000B series, packaged in a 16-SOIC. It counts up on each negative edge of the clock input, with a maximum count rate of 10 MHz — fast enough for most timing-chain and frequency-division tasks in industrial control panels or test equipment. The asynchronous reset (active high) forces all 12 bits to zero immediately, independent of the clock. On a repair bench, that means you can clear the counter state without waiting for a clock edge — useful when sequencing power-up or fault recovery logic.
Operating from 3 V to 18 V, this counter works across a wide supply window — it can sit on a 5 V logic rail, a 12 V industrial bus, or a battery stack without a separate regulator. The 12-bit count depth means it divides the input clock by up to 4096. For a 10 MHz input, the Q12 output toggles at about 2.44 kHz — a clean frequency reference for driving a downstream PLC input or a timer.
Board-fit and sourcing reality
The 16-SOIC (0.154" body width, 3.90 mm) footprint is a standard JEDEC outline — no special land pattern needed. Supplier device package is 16-SOIC, same as the package/case.
