What does this Zener TVS actually do?
The ICTE-12RL4G is a unidirectional Zener-type transient voltage suppressor from onsemi's Mosorb™ series. It clamps overvoltage transients on a 12V nominal rail — the reverse standoff voltage is 12V, meaning it stays off the line under normal conditions and only conducts when the voltage exceeds the breakdown threshold. The peak pulse power rating is 1500W (1.5kW) for a 10/1000µs waveform. That 1500W number is the maximum power the device can absorb in a single pulse before failing — it is not continuous power. For a 12V rail, this translates to a clamping voltage of 21.2V at the peak pulse current of 70A (8/20µs). The 70A figure is the current the diode can handle during that short pulse.
Package and mounting – DO-201AD axial
The ICTE-12RL4G comes in an axial-lead package, with through-hole mounting. The axial leads are meant to be inserted into plated through-holes on the PCB and soldered.
