Darlington output with 500% minimum CTR
The HCPL0701R2 uses a Darlington output stage, giving a minimum current transfer ratio of 500% at 1.6 mA forward current — meaning a 1.6 mA LED drive can sink at least 8 mA at the output. That headroom is what lets you drive logic inputs or low-power relays without a separate buffer transistor. Maximum CTR is 2600% at the same 1.6 mA bias, so the gain spread across production lots is wide. Design the pull-up resistor and load current for the 500% floor, not the typical value, to avoid saturation surprises at cold temperature.
2500 Vrms isolation in an 8-SOIC body
Rated for 2500 Vrms isolation, this part suits reinforced-insulation applications in industrial controls, PLC digital inputs, and motor-drive feedback paths where the galvanic barrier must survive a 2.5 kV hipot test. If your BOM calls for AEC-Q101, this part does not carry that grade.
Switching speed and drive limits
Turn-on time is 300 ns typical; turn-off is 1.6 µs typical. The asymmetric delay means this optocoupler will pass 100 kHz PWM edges but the output pulse width will be compressed by roughly 1.3 µs at the falling edge — account for that in timing budgets for fault-latching or zero-crossing circuits. Output can sink up to 60 mA continuous per channel, and the output transistor is rated to 18 V maximum.
