The onsemi HCPL0638 is a dual-channel optoisolator rated for 10 Mbps data throughput with 3750 Vrms galvanic isolation — fast enough for most industrial fieldbus and PLC digital I/O isolation, with margin for a 75 ns propagation delay budget per channel. Common-mode transient immunity is specified at 10 kV/µs minimum — this is the figure that determines whether the isolator holds its state when a motor drive or inverter switches a high dV/dt across the isolation barrier.
Timing and signal integrity
Rise and fall times are 17 ns and 5 ns typical respectively, which together with the 75 ns max propagation delay define the channel's pulse-width distortion — a factor when the downstream receiver expects a minimum pulse width at the rated data rate. The 2/0 input-side configuration means both channels are driven from the same input side, with no reverse-direction channel — suitable for unidirectional data or control signals where the return path is handled by a separate isolator or a common ground reference on the output side.
Housed in an 8-SOIC narrow-body package (3.90 mm body width), the HCPL0638 fits the standard SOIC-8 footprint used across the HCPL06 family — the same land pattern serves multiple speed and channel-count variants without a layout change.
