Package and board-fit — 8-SOIC footprint
The HCPL0453 comes in an 8-SOIC package (0.154" body width, 3.90 mm) — the standard SOIC-8 footprint with 1.27 mm pitch. The surface-mount body sits low enough that no special clearance is needed under a conformal coat or a nearby tall component. Supplied in tube format, which suits pick-and-place reels for volume runs or bench-level hand assembly for prototypes and rework.
Isolation and signal transfer — what the ratings mean
Rated for 2500 Vrms isolation between input and output — this is the one-minute hipot test voltage per UL 1577. It certifies the optocoupler for basic isolation in mains-referenced circuits, such as a 24 VDC PLC input module or a motor-drive feedback path where the control side must stay galvanically separate from the power stage. The DC input side drives an infrared LED with a typical forward voltage of 1.45 V; the transistor output side switches up to 20 V and sinks 8 mA continuous per channel. The 19% to 50% current transfer ratio at 16 mA forward current means the output transistor can saturate with as little as 3 mA of collector current from a 16 mA input — enough margin to drive a logic gate input or a low-power relay coil directly. Switching times are 450 ns turn-on and 300 ns turn-off typical — this places the part in the high-speed optocoupler class, capable of passing 1 MHz data rates cleanly. The asymmetry (faster off than on) is typical of transistor-output couplers; the pull-up resistor value on the output side sets the rise time and should be chosen to keep the RC time constant below the bit period.
Temperature grade and operating environment
The CTR and switching speed are specified at 25°C; expect the CTR to drop by roughly 20% at the cold end and rise slightly above 25°C, but the 19% minimum at 16 mA still provides adequate drive margin across the band. The 25 mA absolute-maximum forward current limits the LED drive; staying below 20 mA at 85°C keeps the junction temperature within the LED's long-term reliability window.
The base product number HCPL04 covers a family of single-channel high-speed optocouplers; the HCPL0453 is the transistor-output variant in the 8-SOIC package. ROHS3 compliant (lead-free, no restricted substances per EU 2015/863).
