Gate-drive optocoupler with 5 kV isolation
The FOD8480T is a single-channel optocoupler from onsemi designed for driving IGBTs and power MOSFETs in motor drives, inverters, and power supplies. Its 5000Vrms isolation rating provides the reinforced safety barrier required in industrial equipment, while the 20kV/µs common-mode transient immunity keeps the output state stable during fast switching events — a critical parameter in noisy inverter environments where false triggering can cause shoot-through. The output supply range spans 4.5V to 30V, making it compatible with both 5V and 24V gate-drive rails. Propagation delay is 300ns max, which supports switching frequencies up to several tens of kHz with adequate dead-time margin. Rise and fall times are 15ns and 10ns typical, respectively, keeping the gate-drive edges clean.

Temperature grade and environment
Rated for -40°C to 100°C operating temperature, the FOD8480T covers industrial and outdoor telecom enclosures. The optical coupling technology inherently provides galvanic isolation between the input LED and the output detector, eliminating ground loops in mixed-voltage systems. Approvals include IEC/EN/DIN and UL, easing certification for end equipment.
