5000Vrms isolation for motor-drive gate drive
The FOD8342 is a single-channel optocoupler gate driver from onsemi, rated for 5000Vrms isolation — the margin needed to pass reinforced insulation in motor drives, industrial inverters, and power supplies where a galvanic barrier separates the low-voltage control side from the high-voltage power stage. Common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) is 20kV/µs minimum — a spec that matters when the output side sees fast voltage swings from a half-bridge switching node; below this threshold the output can glitch, so the 20kV/µs rating sets the floor for reliable operation in noisy environments.
210ns propagation delay, 65ns pulse-width distortion
Propagation delay is 210ns max for both turn-on and turn-off, and pulse-width distortion (PWD) is max 65ns — the PWD number is the one that matters for dead-time budgeting in a half-bridge: a 65ns mismatch means the dead-time must be padded by at least that much to avoid shoot-through. Rise and fall times are 38ns and 24ns typical, which keeps switching losses low at frequencies up to ~200 kHz for a typical 1nF gate load. Compared to the FOD8343, which shares the same package and pinout but offers 50kV/µs CMTI and 4A peak output, the FOD8342 is the correct choice when the system's dV/dt is below 20kV/µs and the gate charge is moderate — the FOD8343 overspecs the isolation barrier for many designs.
Active production, Tube packaging, 6-SOP footprint
Supplied in Tube for the 6-SOIC package, which measures 0.268" wide (6.80mm) — the 6-SOP footprint is a standard surface-mount outline with a 1.27mm pitch, routable on a 2-layer board if the high-voltage creepage rules are followed.
