16-SOIC wide-body footprint and board integration
The FOD8316 comes in a 16-SOIC (0.295", 7.50 mm width) package, supplier device package 16-SO. The wide-body SOIC provides the creepage distance needed for the 4243 Vrms isolation rating — the 7.50 mm body width is the standard for reinforced isolation in motor-drive and inverter layouts.
3 A peak gate drive with 2.5 A sink/source — switching IGBTs and MOSFETs
Rated 3 A peak output, with 2.5 A source and 2.5 A sink capability (Current - Output High, Low). This drives medium-power IGBTs and MOSFETs in the 600 V to 1200 V class — think 20 A to 50 A discrete TO-247 devices or small IGBT modules. The 34 ns rise and fall times (typical) keep switching losses contained at carrier frequencies up to 20 kHz. Propagation delay tpLH/tpHL is 500 ns max, with pulse width distortion held to 300 ns max — the dead-time budget in a half-bridge leg must account for this asymmetry.
4243 Vrms isolation and 35 kV/µs CMTI — motor-drive and inverter duty
The optical coupling technology delivers 4243 Vrms isolation between input and output — this is the reinforced insulation level required by IEC 60747-5-5 for motor drives, solar inverters, and industrial power supplies. Common-mode transient immunity is 35 kV/µs minimum, which means the gate driver stays latched to its correct output state when the IGBT collector swings 600 V in 200 ns. The supply voltage range is 15 V to 30 V, covering the standard +15 V and -5 V to -10 V gate-drive rails used with IGBTs.
Operating temperature spans -40°C to 100°C, covering the industrial equipment envelope. The 100°C upper limit is the ambient temperature at the device — the gate driver's internal dissipation from the 3 A peak output adds junction temperature rise, so the actual junction temperature under continuous switching at 100°C ambient must be calculated using the package thermal resistance.
