What the 5000 Vrms and 1.5 A peak mean for your power stage
The FOD8314T is a single-channel optoisolated gate driver from onsemi, rated for 5000 Vrms isolation and delivering 1.5 A peak output current. That isolation level suits motor-drive and inverter applications where the control side must be galvanically separated from the 400 VDC bus. The 1.5 A peak can directly drive medium IGBT modules (e.g., 600 V / 1200 V, 15–30 A range) without an external push-pull stage, though larger modules may need a booster. Rise and fall times are 60 ns and 40 ns typical, with a maximum propagation delay of 500 ns. The 300 ns max pulse-width distortion keeps the on-time error small enough for 10–20 kHz switching frequencies typical in industrial drives.
CMTI and operating range for noisy environments
Common-mode transient immunity is rated at a minimum of 20 kV/µs. In a motor-drive inverter, the IGBT switching edges couple several kV/µs across the isolation barrier; a CMTI below that threshold risks false output pulses. The 20 kV/µs floor here is the minimum acceptable for reliable gate drive in industrial drives — it is not the highest in the family, but it meets the requirement for most 3-phase inverter designs. Operating temperature spans -40°C to 100°C, covering industrial cabinet and outdoor telecom environments. The supply voltage range is 16 V to 30 V, which aligns with common gate-drive bias rails for IGBTs (typically 15 V on, -5 V off).
Active production and sourcing reality
No stock-holding claim is made here; the part is sourced per RFQ through authorized and vetted channels.
Package and footprint check for layout
The 6-SOP package has a 0.268-inch (6.80 mm) body width, surface-mount with a standard SOIC-6 footprint. The optical coupling technology means no external isolation transformer is needed — the LED and photodetector are integrated. The forward voltage is 1.5 V typical, and the LED current must be limited to 25 mA max via an external series resistor.
