Gate-drive optocoupler with 5000Vrms isolation
The onsemi FOD3150S is a single-channel gate-drive optocoupler rated for 5000Vrms isolation — the primary spec that decides whether it safely separates the low-voltage control side from the high-voltage power stage in a motor drive or inverter. With a 1.5A peak output current, it drives the gate capacitance of medium-power IGBTs and MOSFETs without an external booster stage; the 1A source and 1A sink capability at the output high/low rails confirms it handles the Miller plateau charge in a typical 600V/1200V switching cycle.
20kV/µs CMTI and 500ns propagation delay
Common-mode transient immunity of 20kV/µs minimum means the output state does not glitch when the power-stage midpoint swings several hundred volts in tens of nanoseconds — this is the figure that keeps a three-phase motor drive from false-triggering the IGBT during a hard-switching event. Maximum propagation delay of 500ns (both tpLH and tpHL) sets the dead-time budget: at a 20 kHz switching frequency, the 500ns delay consumes 1% of the switching period, leaving room for the controller's own dead-time insertion without overlap. Pulse-width distortion is held to 300ns max, so the on-time at the gate driver output stays within 300ns of the input pulse width — important for maintaining the volt-second balance across the transformer in a forward-converter topology.
