Why 5000 Vrms and 3 A matter for gate-drive isolation
The FOD3150ASDV is an onsemi single-channel optocoupler gate driver designed to float a gate-drive signal across a 5000 Vrms isolation barrier. That rating covers the reinforced isolation needed between a 400 VDC bus and a 24 V control side in motor drives, inverters, and industrial power supplies — you get the margin to survive a 2.5 kV surge without breakdown. Peak output current of 3 A means this part can slam a 60 nC IGBT gate from 0 to 15 V in roughly 20 ns, which keeps the Miller plateau short and the switching loss low. The 2 A source / 2 A sink capability is symmetrical, so turn-on and turn-off delays match within 300 ns of pulse-width distortion — important when you're timing dead bands in a half-bridge. Common-mode transient immunity of 20 kV/µs minimum is the spec that separates a gate driver that holds its output during a fast bus-voltage swing from one that glitches and shoots through. In a 600 V inverter where the collector rises 400 V in 20 ns, that's a 20 kV/µs dV/dt — this part is rated to reject exactly that edge.
Parametric deep-dive: timing, drive, and temperature
Propagation delay is 500 ns max for both tpLH and tpHL, with a 60 ns typical rise/fall time. That 500 ns window is the total latency from LED input to gate output — budget it into your dead-time calculation, not just the gate-driver propagation. The output supply range is 15 V to 30 V, which covers standard IGBT gate-drive rails (15 V on, -5 V off) and most MOSFET gate thresholds. The LED forward voltage is 1.5 V typical with a maximum forward current of 25 mA — a 330 Ω series resistor from a 5 V logic output gives about 10 mA, well within the safe zone. Operating temperature spans -40°C to 100°C, which covers industrial enclosures and outdoor cabinets but not engine-bay or downhole environments. If your ambient hits 105°C, you need a different part.
Lifecycle and sourcing: active, ROHS3, surface-mount
That means you can design it into a product with a 3-5 year production horizon without worrying about a sudden LTB. Packaged in 8-SMD gull wing with Tape & Reel and Cut Tape options. The gull-wing leads are inspectable after reflow and easier to rework than a QFN. UL approval is on file — required for safety-certified power supplies and motor drives.
