5300Vrms isolation — what it buys in a safety barrier
The CNY17F2SD is a single-channel transistor-output optocoupler from onsemi, part of the CNY17 family. Its 5300Vrms isolation rating means the input and output sides are galvanically separated by a dielectric barrier certified for reinforced insulation in mains-connected circuits — sufficient for IEC 60950-1 basic isolation at 250V working voltage or reinforced isolation at lower voltages. The 63% to 125% current transfer ratio at 10 mA forward current defines the gain window for the phototransistor. At the minimum CTR of 63%, a 10 mA LED drive yields at least 6.3 mA collector current — enough to saturate the output transistor for a logic-level signal when the collector resistor is sized correctly.
