Isolation voltage and what it means for the board
Rated for 4170Vrms isolation — this is a reinforced-insulation grade optocoupler, suitable for safety barriers in medical, industrial, and power-supply feedback loops where the primary-to-secondary isolation must withstand a 4 kV hipot test. The 6-SMD gull wing package (6-SMD, Gull Wing) is rework-friendly under a hot-air station. The exposed leads are visible for inspection and the package body is small enough that a controlled reflow profile lifts the part without lifting the pads — provided the board is preheated to 100°C to reduce thermal shock.
Current transfer ratio and switching speed — the gain budget
CTR is specified at 40% minimum to 80% maximum at If=10mA. This 2:1 spread means the driven load (a logic gate input, a microcontroller pin, or a low-power relay coil) must tolerate the full gain variation without saturating or failing to switch. Design the collector load resistor for the minimum CTR to guarantee turn-on at the lowest LED current. Turn-on time is 2µs typical, turn-off 3µs typical; rise/fall times are 4µs and 3.5µs respectively. This sets a practical data rate ceiling around 100 kbit/s in a saturated-switching circuit — fast enough for 50/60 Hz zero-crossing detection, relay drivers, and isolated serial links at moderate baud rates, but not for high-speed digital isolation.
