500% minimum CTR at 1.6 mA — the gain decision
The 6N139SV guarantees a current transfer ratio of at least 500% with only 1.6 mA forward current — that is a gain of 5× from the LED to the output phototransistor. For a logic-level input pulling 1.6 mA, the output can sink 8 mA into a load without additional buffering. The Darlington-with-Base topology provides this high gain at the cost of slower switching: 1.5 µs turn-on and 7 µs turn-off typical. The 60 mA continuous output current per channel and 18 V output maximum define the load-side headroom. Driving a 12 V relay coil or a 5 V logic gate both fit within the output compliance, but the 7 µs turn-off time means this part is not a candidate for high-speed data isolation above roughly 70 kHz.
2500Vrms isolation — safety barrier in a surface-mount package
The 2500Vrms isolation rating between input and output meets the basic insulation requirement for many industrial and medical interface circuits. The 8-SMD Gull Wing package with a 0.100-inch lead pitch fits standard reflow profiles and occupies roughly 10 mm × 6 mm of board area. The DC input type means the LED is driven by a steady current — no AC line rectification built in.
