Obsolete — last-time-buy sourcing channel
The 6N138V is officially listed as Obsolete by onsemi.
Darlington output and CTR floor
The 6N138V uses a Darlington with Base output stage, delivering a minimum current transfer ratio (CTR) of 300% at a forward current of 1.6 mA. That CTR floor means the output can sink 60 mA while the input LED draws only a few milliamps — a common choice for logic-level isolation in PLC digital inputs or sensor interfaces where the load side needs higher current gain than a phototransistor provides. The switching times are 1.5 µs turn-on and 7 µs turn-off typical. For a 24 VDC PLC input module sampling at 1 kHz, the 7 µs turn-off is fast enough; above 50 kHz the output rise time starts to limit the data rate.
Isolation and temperature range
Rated for 2500 Vrms isolation between input and output — sufficient for basic insulation in industrial control equipment per IEC 60950-1 reinforced isolation requirements. The 8-DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) through-hole package fits standard 0.100-inch pitch sockets or solders directly into a PCB with 0.300-inch row spacing.
