Isolation voltage and switching speed — the two specs that define the fit
The 6N136SVM provides 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between input and output — the rating that determines whether this opto can sit across a safety barrier in industrial PLCs or medical equipment without creepage failure. Turn-on and turn-off times are 250ns and 260ns typical, respectively, which puts it in the medium-speed class — fast enough for 2-3 MHz digital isolation but not for high-speed fieldbus like EtherCAT.
Current transfer ratio — sizing the LED drive current
CTR is specified at 19% minimum and 50% maximum at a forward current of 16mA. That spread means the designer must ensure the LED drive current is high enough to guarantee the output saturates at the low end of the CTR range, while the high end limits the pull-up resistor value to avoid saturating the output transistor too hard. Compared to the 6N135SVM sibling, which shares the same package and isolation voltage, the 6N136SVM offers faster switching (250ns/260ns vs 230ns/450ns) — a meaningful difference for applications where turn-off delay tightens the timing budget.
