What this 1.5 kW Zener TVS protects
The 1N6286ARL4 is a unidirectional Zener transient-voltage suppressor from onsemi's Mosorb™ series, rated for 1500 W (1.5 kW) peak pulse power at 10/1000 µs waveform. It clamps a transient at 59.3 V maximum when the surge current hits the rated Ipp, and its 36.8 V reverse standoff voltage means it stays out of the way on a 36 V or lower rail. Built for general-purpose circuit protection, it handles the full -65°C to 175°C junction temperature range — suitable for outdoor telecom cabinets, industrial power supplies, and automotive load-dump scenarios where the ambient can swing wide.
Clamping voltages and the protection window
The breakdown voltage (minimum 40.9 V) sits between the standoff and clamp levels. A 36.8 V rail sees no leakage at steady state; the device only conducts when the transient pushes past 40.9 V, and it holds the peak below 59.3 V. That 18.5 V window between standoff and clamp is tight enough to protect 40 V-rated downstream silicon. No power-line protection — this is a signal- or DC-rail suppressor, not for AC mains. The single unidirectional channel handles one polarity; for bipolar rails you need two devices or a bidirectional part.
onsemi lists the 1N6286ARL4 as Obsolete. The DO-201AD axial package is through-hole, supplied in Tape & Reel (TR). Store the reels dry — the axial leads are solderable without special bake if kept in original packaging, but moisture-sensitive labels on the reel should be checked before reflow.
